No other subject is currently moving the cinematic world more than 3D. Film historian and director of the Munich film museum Stefan Droessler takes a look back. His overview of the history of 3-D cinema goes back to the beginnings of optical illusions and showcases rare, historic film material in 3D.
“Extended cinematography – 3D cinema or the dissolution of images?”, German film critic legend Georg Seesslen and Markus Metz address this question on their “tour d’horizon” on the future of cinema.
Producer Michael Wolff (fact + film, Bremen) reports on the technical challenges of 3-D pictures for documentaries. The Award winning films:
Audience award THE HEINRICH
„The Clown“
Italy 2008
Director: Marco Pontecorvo
Script: Maco Pontecorvo, Roberto Tiraboschi
Camera: Vincenzo Carpineta
Editor: Alessio Doglione
Music: Andre Guerra
Actors: Jalil Lespert, Evita Ciri, Gabi Rauta
Production: Ute Leonhardt, Marco Valerio Pugini
Distribution: Beta Film
100 min., 35mm, colour, original with German subtitles

The statement of the jury:
"This was not an easy choice! The competition was strong and with each of the six films it became clear that we would have to to through long disussions. However we have good arguments to award the KINEMA prize to the director of "Sois sage" (Be Good), Juliette Garcias.
All possibilities of film design – image and sound – have been made use of. Thereby the film has acquired a depressing atmosphere, that leads the viewer to doubt. We liked this effect especially. The topic of the film – incest, extreme pain and a strange tenderness – is delicate but nonetheless addressed in very sensible manner. It is a film that impresses and that one can be annoyed by at the same time. The film creates space for personal questions and interpretations and has made his mark on us. It is not only a film that conveys its topic in a sensible manner, but at the same time an artistically refined film that convinced us."

The jury: Anke Bludau, Josephine Blume, Thomas Carrique, Lou Cecille, Claudia Kück

Kurzfilm-Musikpreis DER LEO
„Mama“
Hungary 2009
Director: Géza M Toth
Music: Attila Pacsay,Sound design: Imre Madacsi
Camera: Mátyás Erdély
Sound: Imre Madacsi
Actress: Orsolya Török-Illyés
10:00 min., 35mm, colour, no dialogue
The complete jury statement:
On the roof of a high building a young woman hangs up the washing, on piece after the other. With each piece she pushest he line a little further – at the same time the neighbouring buildings in the background follow – until she reaches the beginning of the line. The entire scene is shot with fixed camera but moves nonetheless – just like in the tricks in the silent movies.

Starting with a loud city street atmossphere with honking horns, street cars, crying babies, talking people, telephone rings and other every day life sounds a rhythmic structure emerges. The more we dive into the young woman’s world, the more the rhythmically aggressive sounds disappear. Slowly a world opens where melodiousness comes to the foreground. Everytime the woman reaches the end of the line, a short moment of silence occurs. Until sounds such as the woman’s heavy breathing and the street sounds return. We have come full circle.
The varied concept of music, sound design and atmosphere is consistent an dwell structured. The acoustic design takes over a mayor part of the story telling, so that a an organic work of direction, sound design and composition sensibly balanced evolves.

Braunschweig International film festival goes Europe

European cinema has been high on the filmfest’s agenda for years. With the audience award...

European cinema has been high on the filmfest’s agenda for years. With the audience award „The Heinrich“, the „European Actors Award“ and the Franco-German youth award KINEMA three of the four festival awards are dedicated to European film making. An effort for European cinema that is well recognized by supporters this year.
Already in 2002 filmfest together with the film foundation of Lower Saxony’s partner region Haute-Normandie, Pôle Image, startet the first film cultural exchange between Germany and France on a regional level.
Since July the festival is part of the new KINEMA-REGIO project. The project aims at promoting the use of film in foreign language teaching. KINEMA-REGIO gives learners and teachers the possibility to enhance their language skills and their knowledge of the other country’s film culture. Altogether nine partners, from schools to film funding agencies of Lower Saxony and Haute-Normandy take part in the project. The funding is provided by the EU-programme for life-long learning „Comenius Regio“ for European cooperation of regions and communities.
Since the late 90ies filmfest belongs to the few festivals supported by the EU MEDIA programme. Now, for the first time, filmfest was selected for a perennial funding. The so-called „framework partnership agreement“ runs over a period of three years. Filmfest will receive 42.000 Euro per year until 2012.
„We have presented a very detailed concept for the next three years, and made clear where we want to improve our commitment for European cinema and its promotion. We are extremely glad that we have received this partnership. A funding of this scale and length of time means much more planning reliability and is a nice recognition of our efforts to foster European film”, says Volker Kufahl, artisitc director of Braunschweig International Film Festival.
