Regulations KINEMA

Competition for debut and second films in German and French languages

The competition

The Braunschweig International Film Festival is the organizer of the German-French Youth Award KINEMA. On the basis of a jury decision a prize is awarded for high artistic quality.

The aims of the award are:

  • to enable a dialogue within the framework of a festival between young German and French people who are interested in films
  • to promote the mutual interest in the other's film culture
  • to support young directors from both countries and involve them into the dialogue between young German and French people
  • to give effective publicity to the German-French exchange between Lower Saxony and Haute-Normandie

The name "KINEMA", a mixture of the words "cinéma" and the German "Kino", has been chosen to resemble the name of the film pedagogical exchange between the state of Lower Saxony and the region of Haute-Normandie.

The competition is supported by the state of Lower Saxony, the Deutsch-Französisches Jugendwerk/Office franco-allemand pour la jeunesse, Antenne métropole, the region of Haute-Normandie, the film foundation Pôle Image Haute-Normandie, and the Académie Rouen.

The Award

The award consists of a diploma as well as a new 35mm single serial copy with German respectively French subtitles for the use at festivals or in cinemas in the other country. The prize is awarded to the director.

If the winning production is a French-speaking film, filmfest Braunschweig, with the agreement of the director and/or the distributor, organizes a tour through public cinemas in Germany.

Furthermore, the film will be processed didactically and methodically by the KINEMA project. Educational material can be downloaded from the homepage of the filmfest Braunschweig for the disposal of interested teachers and students.

Participation and submission

6 to 8 German- and French-speaking first and second films, which have been produced in Europe as long feature films for the cinema market (no TV productions), compete for the award. Their first showing must not date back further than January 1, 2010. Only films can participate which have not been commercially exploited in the cinema or on TV. As well as films, documentaries can be submitted.

Films with a minimum duration of 70 minutes and of a 35mm format are taken into consideration. There is no restriction as to genre or content.

For the previewing DVDs with German or English subtitles as well as the filled-in entry form must be submitted. The closing date is August 1, 2011.

Selection

The organizers appoint a selection committee which nominates 6 - 8 films for the competition. All applicants will be notified by October 15, 2011.

Public showing, presence of film team

Films whose original language is not German have to be subtitled in German or English. German contributions to the competition, however, are to be subtitled in French or English. The organizers can have electronic subtitles produced at their own cost and project them onto the screen via video-beam titling.

The print of the selected film must arrive in Braunschweig by October 23rd, 2011, and remain there up to the end of the festival (November 13, 2011).

All films participating in the youth award "KINEMA" will be shown twice between November 8 and 13. All contributions to the competition should be presented by at least one member of the film team (director, producer, leading actor/actress). The presence of the guests is expected also at the award ceremony.

Travelling and hotel expenses will be paid for by the organizers within reasonable bounds. All bookings will be effectuated by the organizer.

The contributor will provide the organizer with sufficient press material (pictures, posters, press kits etc.).

Determination of the winning film

The organizers appoint a jury consisting of 6 young adults aged 16 to 23. A precondition for working on the jury is an excellent knowledge of German or French respectively.

At the beginning of the filmfest Braunschweig the participating jurors will be prepared for their jury duty by way of a seminar. This preparation will be done by a film scientist or film director, who will also head the jury without the right to vote.

The jury justifies their decision in writing by way of a short bilingual resumé. The award presentation takes place on the last day of the festival (Sunday, November 13).

Expenses, waver of film rental costs

The cost of transporting viewing material, advertizing and press material as well as the film to be shown is assumed by the contributor. The cost of returning said material is assumed by the organizer.

Rental costs will not be paid for any selected competition film. The organizer, however, assumes expenses ensuing from organization of the competition, invitations, travelling and lodging of guests.
