Director, producer and protaganist in one person; Mel Gibson attached much importance to the realisation of BRAVEHEART. Roughly based on historical events, the history of the Scot William Wallace is told, who rebels as a commoner against the English occupation at the end of the 13th century and fights for an independent, Scottish kingdom. He is supported in this cause by Brendan Gleeson who plays Wallace`s grumpy childhood friend Hamish, and Sophie Marceau who as the daughter-in-law of the English king still sticks with Wallace. With a magnificent setting, this dramatic action epos entertains us to the very end. Nominated for 10 Oscars, BRAVEHEART won 5!
