The young aristocrat Hideko lives with her uncle in a castle-like estate in Japanese-occupied Korea. In order to get to her inheritance, a fake count smuggles in the thief Sookee as a maid. But nothing is as it seems in this ambiguous thriller, during which lesbian love, a passion for books and Hokusai`s octopus all play a role. Following his Hollywood debut STOKER with Nicole Kidman, Korea`s most well-known director returns home. His adaptation of Sarah Water`s novel ”Fingersmith” (Solange du lügst) moves the plot from Victorian England to Korea in the thirties and competed in Cannes in 2016.
