Hostile Sisters - Interdependencies of Theatre and Film

Mutual influence and points of contact between theatre and film are both complex and permanently in flux. Along with the ”Enemy Sisters” session, the Film Festival will present a selection of contemporary films, each of which draws on different approaches to theater. Starting with an examination of theater practices in Milo Raus` DIE MOSKAUER PROCESSES, the film section extends further to include adaptation of theatrical texts, as in SAYÔNARA. Various dramatic registers are covered: from BIRDMAN`s star-studded cast and amateur dramatics, to new ways of expression by means of mechanical androids, these films succeed in bringing together different forms of theatrical performance. Furthermore, the films also explore their relationship to the theater at the level of film aesthetics, such as with MARSEILLE`s fixed camera angles or Alejandro G. Iñárritus roving camera, which captures his stage programme within a set of continuous image sequences. In any case, theater is made into a kind of utopia from which new relationships between media may be formed.
