Hans-Erich Viet shot his documentary film about the life in the ”German” Kyrgyz village of Rotfront between Dec. 98 and Aug. 99. The inhabitants are German descendants of the religious community of the Mennonites who came from Friesia more than 300 years ago. They speak Low German - like the East Friesian director and not only their taste of liver sausage reminds us of the roots of our culture. 17 years later the village has emigrated to Germany, only a few old people and some that are disappointed with Germany are still there. The film is about a culture which does not reallly exist any more. Viet has accompanied the lives of some people and their animals closely and almost affectionately.
