TALES OF TERROR from 1962 is the fourth of eight films in a cycle of Poe-adaptations, which Roger Corman realised within 5 years. Based on four short stories by Poe, the film fascinates less through it ›subtle storytelling‹ or ›aesthetic approach that is faithful to the original‹. It is much more - in the words of the New York Times – ”a dull, absurd and trashy adaptation”. And this is why it is completely convincing. What makes the film is its tendency to big letters (”A Trilogy of SHOCK and HORROR”), its performers (incl. Peter Lorre in one of his last (tragic) roles) and the directing of Corman who has what John Waters once called ›true showmanship‹.
