Gerry Boyle is a crass, drunk local bobby with unorthodox methods and a strange sense of humour. THE GUARD is a very Irish, darkly humourous version of classic Buddy Movies a la Hollywood. Described as a western by writer and director John Michael McDonagh, its dry humour centres on the main character played by Brendan Gleeson. The Irish actor fits the role perfectly and gives the best performance of his career.
