In a selection of scenes, this cinematic hagiography portrays Luther’s life and work from his student days, through his confrontation with the sale of indulgences, the Pope and the Emperor up to his return to Wittenberg to put a stop to the iconoclasts. Here pure fiction stands on equal terms alongside traditional accounts and historically authentic events. Filmed in the Berlin Universal Film Company studios at considerable cost and with a lineup of stars, LUTHER is an important protestant, national-conservative historical document of the Weimar Republic. The anti-catholic propaganda was staged by script-writer Hans Kyser (NATHAN THE WISE, FAUST), this being his only directorial work. This emotionally gripping and visually stunning production was inspired by the chiaroscuro techniques of the Baroque painters, in particular Rembrandt.
