Andreas Lewin new director of Braunschweig International Film FestivalBraunschweig

Andreas Lewin is the new director Braunschweig International Film Festivals. Lewin used to head the DOKUARTS Festival in Berlin which he also founded. The 51-years-old has studied acting and documentary film-making. He produced several artist documentaries, ie. on actor Klaus Kammer as well as on the directors Fritz Kortner and the participatory model of Berlins Schaubühne under Peter Stein. He also curated several film programmes for numerous international festivals and cultural institutions such as Vienna Modern, the Brazillian Instituto Moreira Salles and the Netherlandic Eye Film Institute.

“As for many artists, cinemas and cultural institutions, the Corona crisis also poses an existential thread to film festivals. Shortly before the outbreak of the crisis, I took over the direction of Braunschweig International Film Festival. Now, crisis management is needed in order to guide the festival in a common effort with the professional team, the association’s board and the numerous volunteers to the future. In spite of everything, we currently act under the assumption, that we will be able to host the 34th edition of the festival, and I am very much looking forward to my first edition”, says Lewin.

The versatile possibilities with regard to the content motivated him to take over the festival’s helm. Among these were “especially the promotion of European talents, the musical-cinematographical focus, the possibilities to also introduce documentaries, to present exhibitions and symposiums, and thus scientific issues at the same time.”

The new director will put his emphasis on further internationalizing and further professionalizing the festival, as well as expanding and focusing the existing program’s profile. He already outlines his first project: “a programme with Canadian films on the arts, supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.”

The presidents of the festival’s association, Florence Houdin and Thorsten Rinke, were delighted, that “after an intense selection process we managed to win Andreas Lewin to head the festival. With a film industry expert like him, the festival is extremely well prepared for its future development.

Dr. Frank Woesthoff, head of communication of Volkswagen Financial Services AG, the festival’s main sponsor emphasizes: „With Andreas Lewin an internationally experienced director will head Braunschweig International Film Festival, who with his thorough expertise likewise as an artists and organiser bears best prerequisites for a further development and a successful future of the festival. Welcome to Braunschweig!“
