“The image demands to be heard”, is the title of Ken Hollings` essay on JOHNNY YESNO (1982). This is the programmatic statement for the whole evening. Curator Nigel Humberstone presents nine videos. THE SOUND OF SHEFFIELD starts with Peter Care`s debut JOHNNY YESNO. Arguably the first, if not the last, instance of Sheffield film noir – it is one of the great visual evocations of the UK’s post-industrial dysphoria. The film’s broodingly psychotic, morally compromised atmosphere is beautifully echoed and enhanced by its soundtrack, written and performed by Cabaret Voltaire. The authors of the book “Sound of the Cities”, Ole Löding and Philipp Krohn, curate THE SOUND OF LIVERPOOL AND MANCHESTER. NIGEL HUMBERSTONE: Born 1961, he and his twin brother Klive Humberstone constitute the nucleus of Sheffield-based musical project IN THE NURSERY since 1981. In 2008 Nigel Humberstone became the Music Director of the SENSORIA Music & Film Festival. He curates a one-hour music video programme for the BIFF. Nigel Humberstone will share his personal view on the past, present and future of music from his hometown in a Q&A session.
