13-year-old Alpha comes home from school with a tattoo. Fear and suspicion arise regarding a deadly blood disease that turns people to marble... This time, director Julia Ducournau, who won the Palme d’Or in 2021 for TITANE, creates a more personal narrative. In visually striking scenes that mediate between nightmare and metaphor, the film portrays the hardship of growing up in a world where even the body can turn against you. Ducournau symbolically weaves together sickness, physicality and isolation to create a portrait of fear, love and decay – provocative, emotionally raw and disturbing at the same time.
