Leningrad in 1945. The Second World War has devastated the city and has buried its citizens under emotional ruins. Two young women, Iya and Masha, search for meaning and hope in their lives among the ruins. They are slowly learning to live again, how to allow feelings and how to express them... "I was interested in what happens to a woman after a war is over? There was obviously a tectonic shift in her mind (...), damage to her nature," says director Balagov, winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes in 2017. BEANPOLE's script was inspired by the work of Nobel Literature Prize Winner Svetlana Alexievich "The war has no female face".
