Beyond: War on Everyone

“Beyond” kicked off the 2015 film festival programme, showing its commitment to new and exciting cinema. For the first time this year the festival will award the “Black Lion”. The 2,500 Euro prize will be presented by a three person jury for the best film from the section. The award is made possible by the festival`s main sponsor Volkswagen Financial Services. After last year, where “Beyond: Love” examined changes in the world of love, this year`s theme is “War on everyone”: what happens when the individual faces overwhelming forces. As such, the films limit perspective, space, number of protagonists: In AMBULANCE, it`s from within an ambulance that the war between Hamas and Israel can be observed. CLASH never leaves the 8 m² of a police truck. In KOLLEKTOR, it`s a man alone in his room, who must save himself. It`s socio-dramatic situations, reflecting the current schisms in the West or Muslim world, which provide the starting point for the films, before growing out of the conventions of art-house social drama. Out of this arise unique fusions of genre, leading to haunting, almost tangible experiences – like the film (although out of the competition) HARDCORE HENRY, filmed from the `ego-shooter` perspective with GoPro cameras.
