Christina, 78, travels only reluctantly to the funeral of her sister, with son and granddaughter, to Lappland. She belongs to the indigenous Sami people who as reindeer herders cultivate their own language and culture, and whose every day life is characterised by social prejudices and racist discriminations. In a flashback to the 30s, the film shows her youth as Elle Marja and how the break with her own origin came about. With impressive images and a great main actor, the director – daughter of a Sami father and a Swedish mother – draws the portrait of a strong-willed young woman, who pays a high price for her independence.
