Can you make jokes about the Holocaust? Yes, is the answer, when the theme is handled by a director with integrity like Chris Kraus. For his new film, Kraus, himself a historian, has been researching the Nazi era for over ten years. The respected Holocaust researcher and misanthrope Toto Blumen (Lars Eidinger), himself the descendent of a prominent Nazi offender, has to organise an Auschwitz conference in the middle of a personal crisis. He is helped by a much younger French research assistant Zazie (Adèle Haenel), whose grandmother was killed in Auschwitz. They soon discover that they are united by a past family tragedy from long ago.
