In 2005, Charlie Kaufman won the Oscar for the best original screenplay for this film: Joel (Jim Carrey) finds out that his ex (Kate Winslet) has had their chaotic relationship erased from her memory. Out of desperation, Joel goes through the same treatment. At first, the erasure works but when it is a matter of fond memories, his subconscious seeks loopholes. A “hilarious tragicomedy about the complex of ideas of memory/recollection … with again and again new, unexpected twists …. starts up …. a philosophical discourse on love and juggles virtuously with the potential of cinema.”(Filmdienst).
