1954, at the start of the Algeria war: when a rebellion is brewing in the valley, two contrary men flee together over the Algerian Atlas Mountains. In the middle of a freezing winter, Daru, a teacher leading a withdrawn life, is to escort the farmer Mohamed - who has been charged with murder - to a French court. Pursued by French soldiers and local villagers who have sworn blood revenge, they find their way through the mountains to fight together for their inner and outer freedom. In front of the backdrop of magnificent landscape images and accentuated by the music of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, the protagonists develop their own definition of freedom of choice and justice.
