The motorway between Germany and Turkey, the former European Route 5 (E5), has been used since the 1960s by several generations of travellers with family ties in both countries. The route was and still is very busy, particularly during holiday periods. This phenomenon recounts a special chapter in the history of Turkish-German migration. It is linked to a travel narrative in which the figure of the marginalised migrant worker is overlaid by that of the self-determined individual tourist. In a 1978 documentary, actor and filmmaker Tuncel Kurtiz portrays various travellers on this route – between border crossings, picnic breaks and accidents. (Can Sungu)

Director's Biography:Tuncel Kurtiz (1936-2013) was a Turkish film and theatre actor and director who participated in numerous international productions. In 1978, he was commissioned by Swedish television to portray families on the busy E5 motorway. He also lived and worked in Germany for many years.
