GROSSE FREIHEIT unrolls a dark chapter of German social history and begins in 1968, which is in fact the year of the sexual revolution. Not for gays, though. For them, the infamous Article 175 still applies, which punishes homosexual activity between men with up to ten years in prison. Hans (Franz Rogowski) - who can't and won't let go of love - goes to prison several times for his "deeds" and meets the homophobic murderer Viktor (Georg Friedrich) there every time. A claustrophobic chamber drama about suppressed feelings and longings begins. World premiere and jury prize in the UN CERTAIN REGARD series at the Cannes Festival.
