In August and September of 1999 – ten years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the corresponding collapse of the communistic european superstate – Nicolas Rey travelled Russia toward Magadan, a mining town and what used to be a centralized punitive colony for exiles. Day two was the worst. Everything stayed the same on the train, I impatiently stared at my feet. By day three, things started to look less grim. One gets used to the slowness, the unchanging scenery, a life structured by eat-and-sleep-cycles that have nothing in common with everyday living. Sometimes pondering, sometimes ironic, politically ever-alert and artistically always fascinatingly headstrong in its hypnotic pace.
