Director Mouly Surya combines Western, samurai and fantasy elements in a colourful genre mix which take place against an amazing backdrop. The setting is the barren Sumba Island, one of the numerous Indonesian islands, which according to Surya is one of the poorest provinces of Indonesia. At the centre of the action is heroine Marlina who has to make a stand against a local gang of criminals. The subsequent fatal act of violence serves as an excellent starting-point for us to meditate on a woman fighting for self-determination and integrity in a patriarchal society. At the same time, the film entertains us with its dry humour and brilliant soundtrack.
