”All my films are based on the thought that a large part of life is unfathomable, full of misunderstandings and left to chance”, is how Angela Schanelec describes her film work. MARSEILLE too has as its theme the misery of everyday life when the young photographer flees from her Berlin routine into the French city. What she sees there, photographs and feels makes it impossible for her to remain any longer in the rigid conditions of her home. MARSEILLE arranges its filmic frames like a stage setting , in front of which the figures act and which helps to bring theatricality to everyday feelings.
