From refugee to a non-conformist pop star and bad girl: portrait of the British musician and political activist M.I.A. and her rise to pop icon inspired by hip-hop and the dancehall. As early as her childhood in Sri Lanka, Mathangi ”Maya” Arulpragasam was influenced by the battle of her father in the Tamil resistance. This characterises the musician`s own artistic and political attitude which because of her provocative music videos stirs things up again and again. During her art and film studies, she constantly has her camera with her.
