Mozambique 1917. Alone, the young recruit Zacarias battles his way through hundreds of kilometers of wilderness in order to defend the Portuguese colony against the Germans. Filmmaker João Nuno Pinto stages an Odyssey through moral twilight zones and colonial quagmire. He calls his epic a “war movie without a war”. First and foremost, MOSQUITO is a film about the war of men against themselves. As if bitten by a malaria mosquito, the main character and the audience alike fall into a feverish dream that summons the displaced spectres of colonialism. MOSQUITO was the opening film at the Film Festival Rotterdam, the first Portuguese film ever to open a A-film festival!

Director's Biography:João Nuno Pinto was born 1969 in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique. Shortly after the declaration of independence, he moved to Portugal where he started a carrier in advertising. MOSQUITO is his second film and was inspired by his grandfather’s experiences during World War I.
