New International Cinema

Since 1987, the first year of the Braunschweig Film Festival, the series NEW INTERNATIONAL CINEMA has been at the heart of the programme. Back then they were still known as “premiers”, later named the “International Series”, these films represent the passion for looking beyond our horizons. Once around the world in cinema – including: new works from old masters like the social-realist awardwinning film from Cannes, I, DANIEL BLAKE by Ken Loach or the latest film from the 84-year-old Otar Iosseliani, the enjoyable farce WINTER SONG. But there are also (as yet) unknown names on the programme with breathtaking images and striking stories. The range goes from the Danish costume drama SATISFACTION 1720 to the visually powerful mixture between documentary and fiction in the Afghanistan-based LAND OF THE ENLIGHTENED, through to the crazy South Korean gangster comedy THE LAUNDRYMAN to the gripping poetic scenes in ANISHOARA from Moldova. North America is under-represented this year; instead, we`re offering the new film of the grand master Park Chan-Wook THE HANDMAIDEN from South Korea.
