New International Cinema

The motives and genres of the programmes are universal and invite us to directly compare the scripts of the most differing directors. So AT WAR, about an industrial dispute in France and the drama NORTHERN WIND, about a firm relocation to Tunisia, show the effects of global capitalism on people. The films ASTRID and MARY SHELLEY examine the lives of two writers. The thriller BIRDS OF PASSAGE takes us into the indigenous drug scene in Columbia, and in the Chines e ASH (German premiere) two murders are central stage. The Egyptian “feel good” film YOMEDDINE in contrast has to be compared with VOLCANO, a tragicomical road movie from the Ukraine. LAST SUITE, although completely different, fits into this genre too about the journey of an 88-year-old from Argentina to Poland, and finally the Iranian Film THREE FACES, which won a prize in Cannes, is set in part during a car trip into the mountains. Which social satire is more cutting: the Polish MUG or PITY from Greece? In addition, there are some real dramas and much emotion, including the melodramas COLD WAR from Poland and the Kenyan film SUPA MODO about the power of fantasy.
