June 1945. Badly injured, with a wrecked face, the Ausschwitz survivor Nelly is taken back to her home city Berlin by a girlfriend from prewar days. Although she has hardly recovered from her face operation, she goes in search of her husband. The latter however is convinced that his wife is dead. When Nelly finds him, he only recognises a disturbing similarity. Johnny proposes that she slips into the role of his presumed dead wife in order to secure the inheritance of Nelly`s family murdered in the Holocaust. Nelly goes along with this. She becomes her own doppelganger. She would like to know whether Johnny ever loved her, or whether he betrayed her. Nelly wants her life back.
