A small town in Montana at the beginning of the 60s: the marriage of Jeanette (Cary Mulligan) and Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal) is put to a hard test when Jerry loses his job and is sent to work for some weeks as a volunteer to fight forest fires. And so Joe, the 14-year-old son, has to observe how the family drifts apart and especially how his mother is changing more and more. For now she has to somehow provide for the family and break out of her normal fixed role as housewife.
