BIFF presents … AT MIDNIGHT for the fourth time. After GERMAN ANGST, LOVECRAFT and POE in previous years, this time it’s all about WITCHES. The first witch was shown in Georges Méliès‘ LE MANOIR DU DIABLE (1896). Since then the witch has become a standard topos of fantastic cinema, mostly pretty sleazy presented. But this changed in 2015. Robert Eggers’ THE VVITCH – A NEW-ENGLAND FOLKTALE transcended the subgenre and ushered in a witch film renaissance. The BIFF presents the cream of the crop from the USA, Ireland, Czechia and Germany. The four feature films and one short film tackle the subject in a whole new way. Women who have to deal with loss are in the focus of each film. They fight their fate and choose unusual measures to achieve their goal. Anna Biller’s THE LOVE WITCH presents this topic in a light-hearted but nonetheless deadly manner. Jiří Sádek’s THE NOONDAY WITCH is sinister summertime psycho-horror taking place under a sweltering midday sun. Liam Gavin’s gripping thriller A DARK SONG shows a dramatic shift of power from an occultist to a grieving mother. And Patrick Müller’s short film WALPURGIS NIGHT is a gothic piece of jewellery based on a poem by Theodor Storm.
