Die EUROPA for August Diehl

In 2026, the BIFF will honor August Diehl with the EUROPA Award for his many years of outstanding acting achievements and contributions to European film culture.

Whether on stage or in front of the camera— August Diehl impresses with his multifaceted acting. He is known for his portrayals of often dark characters, to whom he lends a credible complexity through his artistic sincerity. This year, the BIFF is honoring August Diehl with The EUROPA in recognition of his many years of outstanding acting achievements and contributions to European film culture. The European Acting Award is endowed with 25,000 euros and is sponsored by Volkswagen Financial Services.

From his debut 23 – NOTHING IS AS IT SEEMS to THE DISAPPEARANCE OF JOSEF MENGELE, for which he received the German Film Award this year—August Diehl looks back on a filmography of more than 50 productions, five of which he has personally selected for the retrospective at BIFF.

On Saturday, November 14, 2026, he will participate in a conversation with film critic Daniel Kothenschulte at the ASTOR Filmtheater about his career and his work. The EUROPA will host August Diehl that same evening at 7:30 p.m. at the awards ceremony at the Staatstheater Braunschweig’s main auditorium.
