To mark this year's International Women's Day, the Braunschweig International Film Festival (BIFF) and the Wolfsburg Planetarium are hosting another galactic film screening on March 8. Visitors can expect an emotional journey through the world of a strong woman who is training hard for her professional dream of becoming the first woman to fly to Mars. She is prepared for anything to survive in space. Almost everything - because she also has to say goodbye to her daughter.

On Friday, March 8, 2024, the Braunschweig International Film Festival and the Wolfsburg Planetarium will be showing the drama PROXIMA by Alice Winocour. Visitors can let themselves be captivated by the emotional story in the special setting under the stars of the planetarium. The leading roles are played by Eva Green, Matt Dillon and Lars Eidinger. Meanwhile, guests can also look forward to the acting performances of Sandra Hüller, who is currently nominated for an Oscar.

Separation of mother and daughter for the professional dream

At the center of the evening is the strong leading role of Sarah, who not only trains to survive in space for her professional dream of being the first woman to explore Mars, but also to be there for her family as a mother. When the young astronaut is selected for the one-year Proxima space mission, intensive preparation begins. Together with her crew members, she prepares herself in the ESA training program to function in the cosmos. Everything in her is conditioned for the moment when she leaves Earth. There is only one thing she cannot train for: saying goodbye to her little daughter Stella.

With her story about an astronaut who can only fulfill her professional dream if she separates from her daughter, director Alice Winocour succeeds in creating a deeply moving and important drama. In keeping with International Women's Day, the film addresses the contradiction between career and family as what it is for many women every day: a superhuman task.

"As a cultural scientist, I have intensively studied the history and career paths of female space travel: Women are still not equally represented in space travel either. That is why I am delighted that we are able to show a great, albeit fictitious, example of the reconciliation of family and career in space travel for this year's International Women's Day. The cooperation with the BIFF pays off for the Wolfsburg Planetarium in many different and special ways when we are able to show visitors such important films," outlines Eileen Pollex, Managing Director of the planetarium.

International Women's Day with the Braunschweig International Film Festival

International Women's Day has been drawing attention to the rights of girls and women and equal rights since 1911. "I am delighted that we can contribute to International Women's Day with our special film evening at the Wolfsburg Planetarium. PROXIMA: DIE ASTRONAUTIN stages the female perspective in a male-dominated professional field and also addresses the compatibility of family and career in a very authentic way," says Karina Gauerhof, Co-Festival Director of the Braunschweig International Film Festival, looking ahead.

The Braunschweig International Film Festival and the Wolfsburg Planetarium cordially invite all interested parties to take part in this planetary film evening on March 8 at 7 pm. The successful collaboration between the Braunschweig International Film Festival and the Wolfsburg Planetarium will continue this year. Cinema enthusiasts can therefore look forward to many more film adventures in a galactic atmosphere in 2024.
