Beyond: Self-Display

”Being a no one is scary”, says a girl in the girl group docu BNK48: GIRLS DON'T CRY. This statement is emblematic of the films of this year’s main focus: BEYOND: SELF-DISPLAY. What influence does the scope of Web 4.0 have on human self-perception and self-portrayal? Do Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc serve social interaction or do they just invite us to “exhibit ourselves”? What influence does acting in virtual space have on our relationships in the real world? Already in its fifth year, BEYOND presents films that move beyond the classical paths. BEYOND stands for exciting cinema that wants to remain the leading visual medium and strongly counters the flood of images on the Internet. In four documentaries, filmmakers reflect on these questions using material from the web and open up new aesthetic spaces for the cinema. With the films JAWLINE from the US, and PRESENT. PERFECT. from Hong Kong, Europeans can cast a look into their own near future - which is actually already the present as shown in the feature film LIKEMEBACK and the short film programme. We would like to discuss this with you, face to face.
