Gérard Kikoïne’s sleazy 80s adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous horror novella “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” mixes it with the murders of Jack the Ripper. As a result, the film does not dwell on an intensive character study of Jekyll, but instead focuses on Hyde’s nefarious deeds as a prostitute murderer in bloody, surreal scenes of sex and murder. “Numerous expressionist shadow plays and oblique angles are employed in order to visualise a Victorian pandemonium of amorality and immorality. The murders are thereby portrayed all too drastically, and Anthony Perkins also delivers a little too much of a good thing.” (FILMDIENST)
