Taking a different look at Cuba: In the 1990s, hundreds of young people – who were faced with material hardship and a lack of freedom – deliberately infected themselves with HIV in order to receive treatment in a state quarantine sanatorium in the hope of being cured at a later date. This fact-based film with a powerful soundtrack, winner of the Marimbas Award, recounts the story of this rebellious subculture using the example of a young punk-rock group that, instead of continuing to harvest sugar cane, seeks an escape from the repressive reality in order to survive. In a community of solidarity, they defy social norms and create a form of freedom for themselves – as "“Frikis”. 

Director's Biography:Tyler Nilson (born 1981) is a director, actor and adventurer. He founded the production company “Lucky Treehouse” with Michael Schwartz in 2014. THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON, which was screened at the BIFF in 2019, was their feature-film debut.
