No other Shakespeare play was so often made into a gangster film than ”The Tragedie of Macbeth”. Here we have an extremely stylish Hindi version with many unique ideas – the witches are policemen, for instance, which fits the genre perfectly. This goes for the whole thing: an act of devotion to the greatest of all Elizabethan dramatists (who Viśāl Bhārdvāj goes on to worship twice more in his films, although not as good as here): Maqbūl is, first and foremost, a blisteringly brutal, gangster film with elements of musical Bollywood. Remember: No law is as iron as Indian commercial cinema – the local underworld`s favourite for money-laundering.
