New German Films

What is being shown in the series NEW GERMAN FILMS in this anniversary year? The films this year show a broad range from entertainment to drama, from the multifaceted to the unsettling. We are showing the new film of Chris Kraus, who after his audience prize for 4 MINUTEN is now present at the Festival with DIE BLUMEN VON GESTERN (Flowers of Yesterday). Unadorned but impartially, Ulrich Seidel‘s documentation SAFARI shows tourists in Africa on big-game hunting. And, last but not least, DER TRAUMHAFTE WEG (The Dreamlike Path), the new film of Angela Schanelec which places people in the forefront. And we are showing young German cinema with the experimental, daring documentary film VIOLENTLY HAPPY and the German premiere of YOUKALI. The contributions to this year’s KINEMA competition are three films from different genres: the German Mumblecore film, BEAT BEAT HEART; DIE EINSIEDLER (THE ERMITES), with tranquil, intensive images from the loneliness of the mountains, and DIE HABENICHSTE (The Have-Nots), a film adaptation of a novel, directed by Braunschweig’s Florian Hoffmeister about feelings of guilt in the times of 9/11. The only thing left to say: apart from socially relevant themes, stories above all about the human essence are shown. And in this year, especially films about remarkable female characters. We think this is a worthy programme for the anniversary year! The series NEUE DEUTSCHE FILME is supported again this year by gaertner Datensysteme.
