In the plains of Laikipia in Northern Kenya, the nomadic Samburu and white settlers live in peaceful coexistence. As the drought continues, however, colonial injustices are coming to light, as green pastureland is crucial for the survival of the cattle herds belonging to both the settlers and the nomads. The settlers demarcate “their” land with electric fences, thereby blocking cattle routes that have been in use for centuries. The nomads, in turn, invade the fenced-off areas out of a need to survive. Two years without rain lead to devastation, deaths and mutual recriminations. THE BATTLE FOR LAIKIPIA uses harrowing images – from the perspectives of both parties involved in the conflict – to illustrate the escalating battle for resources in times of climate change.
