In the 1980s, New York swallows up its people: violence and drugs dominate the city, which can no longer show a police presence because of public cutbacks. Private money rules ruthlessly. In Queens, the borough dominated by real estate mogul Fred Trump, two boys attend a privileged private school. Even here, no one can escape the shadow of the entrepreneur who once enrolled his son Donald in this school. The boys experience money-driven inequality in an increasingly dysfunctional system. Things cannot go on like this. Director James Gray processes his own youth and shows how the past influences our present.

Director's Biography:James Gray, born in New York in 1969, originally wanted to become a painter, but studied at the Film University of South Carolina. There his short films caught the eye of producers, who entrusted him with major productions after graduation.
