What influence does the cinematic representation of women have on the discriminatory structures of our society? In her film essay, Nina Menkes shows how frightening the answer to this question is. Using numerous film examples, it becomes clear that women and their bodies are portrayed differently than men. And this sexualising "male gaze" also has a huge impact on the perception of women outside the cinematic world. This is frightening - and empowering: because with this knowledge we can do things differently in the future. After the screening, we will discuss feminist production concepts and empowering visual languages with invited filmmakers.

Director's Biography:Considered a cinematic feminist pioneer and one of America’s foremost independent filmmakers, Menkes has shown widely in major international film festivals including multiple premieres at Sundance, the Berlinale, Cannes (ACID), Rotterdam, Locarno, Toronto, La Cinematheque Francaise, British Film Institute, Whitney Museum of American Art, MOMA in New York, MOCA and LACMA in LA.
