The conversion of our economy to renewable energies and sustainable production processes requires many rare raw materials. Large quantities of these are contained in the manganese nodules in the deep sea. DEEP RISING follows companies and environmental activists and their efforts to obtain licences for deep-sea mining or to prevent it. "Without a fundamental paradigm shift in mind, we continue to extract rare resources by destroying fragile ecosystems, making planetary collapse inevitable. My film shows a simple truth: We have implemented a model of limitless growth on a limited planet," says director Matthieu Rytz.
