From an early age, songs and fairy tales convince young Zelma that love will solve all her problems as long as she behaves like "a real girl". But as she grows older, this conception of love does not seem to really work. The film combines historical, biological and social aspects with a playful sense of humour and musical vocal interludes. Allegedly opposing animation styles are mixed together - serious and artsy, yet equally light-hearted and witty. An award-winning animated film about self-acceptance and female rebellion against social norms in the Soviet Union around the year 1990.
