Picture by Erik Molberg Hansen. Portrait of the young Astrid Lindgren. While still living on her parents` farm, the 17-year-old does voluntary work at the local newspaper and becomes the lover of the publisher and chief editor. Pregnant at 18, she goes into apprenticeship in Stockholm, gives birth to her child in Denmark and leaves the child with a foster mother. She turns down the marriage proposal of her lover and decides to provide alone for herself and her son. Pernille Fischer Christensen, by means of children`s letters to the grand old writer, lets the latter`s youth pass in review, and shows too what a strong independent woman Lindgren was and where her empathy regarding lonely, deserted children comes from.
