Bernard Lotz (Jörg Pleva) is a candidate in a TV show. For a whole week, he has been chased by contract killers (Dieter Hallervorden amongst others) and in so doing is being pursued around the clock by a camera team. If Lotz manages to escape the killers, then he`ll get a million marks. The audience are present all the time and follow the game of life and death. After the broadcast of DAS MILLIONENSPIEL, the editorial staff of the WDR were overwhelmed with complaints. The producers of the film were said to be ”addicted to drugs” or should be put in the loony bin. However, some viewers took the film too seriously and wanted to register themselves as candidates.
