In a wonderfully absurd story, all sorts of characters are shown: a cunning soap salesman, a false Buddhist monk, a frustrated reforestation official, a missionizing (very naive) Christian and two hopeless overtaxed policeman - all of them lay actors, by the way! The film, with its wonderful pictures, takes us into a fairly rundown industrial area in winterly North China. According to his own statement, the director shows ”the absurdity of the Chinese daily life which leads to cynicism and anger” - FREE AND EASY has the meaning of being ”provocative and joking” in North China. The dry humour of this crook comedy remind us at times of the films of Aki Kaurismäko or Jim Jarmusch.
