With fine intuition, tenderness and humour director Andreas Dresen takes a look at the life of Gerhard "Gundi" Gundermann – an excavator driver who writes songs, who is a poet, a clown and an idealist. Who dreams and hopes and lives and fights. A spy who's being spied on. A do-gooder who doesn't know any better. A man torn apart. He died in 1998 at the age of 43. A love and music film, a drama about guilt and entanglement, a story of repression and self-sacrifice. “A clever, sincere and moving music film about a lived life with all its ideals and disappointments. It's time for such films about the GDR.” (Radio eins)
