Years after the end of the First World War, the climate on the German-French border is still marked by resentment – when the children play marbles or when the adults are on the dance floor. However, when 600 men on the French side are buried during a pit disaster, the German miners rush to help without hesitation. Mate is mate. Gregor and Patalas write in their ”History of the Film” (1962): ”Pabst shows the combination of class rule and nationalist ideology. Like WEST FRONT in 1918, this film is again also rich in sequences of intense realism.” In Germany, the film was a commercial flop, in France on the other hand it was successful.
