Turkish metalworker Cafer brings his family to Germany, convinced that the dream of unlimited possibilities will come true. His new life, however, brings with it many difficulties and unexpected developments: his wife becomes involved in the women’s movement and changes rapidly, his older son becomes lonely and refuses to go to school, and his daughter has to stay at home to look after her newborn brother. Following its completion, the film was banned by the censorship committee in Turkey at the time: It offended “the honour of Germany, the allied nation”. Director Korhan Yurtsever was prosecuted as a result of the film and fled to Berlin, where he lived in exile for several years. (Can Sungu)
