When she was 16, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin got to know and love the poet Percy Shelley. Together with Shelley, she travelled though Europe, got to know Lord Byron and in a stormy night on Lake Geneva she began the novel that was to make her immortal: Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus. The film describes the years in Mary Shelley`s life between the start of her relationship with Shelley and the publication of the second edition of Frankenstein (now with the author`s name) ”I had the feeling that her journey should be celebrated by women, everywhere, because this is what we want to do to - like her - conquer new borders”, is what director Haifaa Al-Mansour says about her film.
