Jan A.P. Kaczmarek is an internationally renowned film composer and the first Polish Oscar award-winner. He first of all studied law, broke off his planned career as a diplomat - but for political reasons. When he moved to the USA from Poland in 1989, he was able to already look back on a successful career as a theatre and film composer. In the USA he was first of all successful with theatre music and won the Obie Award and the Drama Desk Award. He soon managed to get a foothold in the US movie industry, and he wrote music for sixty films, including BLISS (1997), UNFAITHFUL (2002), EVENING (2007) und HACHI: A DOG`S TALE (2009). Kaczmarek composed for directors like Lasse Hallström, Agnieszka Holland, Lajos Koltai or Adrian Lyne. In 2005, he won the Oscar for the best film music for FINDING NEVERLAND. His symphonic works include the ”Cantata for Freedom” for the 25th anniversary of Solidarność and the Oratorium “1956” in memory of the uprising in Poznan. Apart from his music, Kaczmarek presides over the film and music festival TRANSATLANTYK Lodz, which he founded in 2011 and which attracted 63,000 visitors in 2017. He has been awarded the Polonia Restituta medal.
